Supermassive Games is best known for its branching narrative horror adventure games. The studio first came into prominence with 2015's Until Dawn, which was inspired by the teen slasher genre. The developer then released Until Dawn spiritual successor The Quarry this past summer, which is similarly a cinematic choice-driven narrative, where the player's actions can have long-lasting consequences during their playthrough. These essentially give fans the chance to play an interactive horror movie, with the right choices leading to every character in The Quarry staying alive, and vice-versa.
The Quarry has gotten mostly positively reviews from fans and critics, with some calling it one of the best games from the studio since Until Dawn. While delayed, the game also saw post-launch multiplayer support, where players can join in on a session and vote for what would be the best decision during the game. The director of The Quarry, Will Byles, recently spoke with VGC regarding the studio's next game, teasing what will be included as well.
When asked about its scale, Byles confirmed that this next project would be the same scope and size as The Quarry. This project will be a full-scale narrative adventure in the horror genre, where players are given the same amount of choices and playtime with a large cast of characters. He notes that with a longer story, more time can be given to the characters where the players can explore the relationships between each one, as opposed to a shorter game like The Dark Pictures.
Byles notes that while this next game will be focused on the horror genre again, the team might be deviating away from the teen horror sub-genre specifically. He states that there's only so much that the developers can "stretch the teen horror thing out" with the number of scares and surprises becoming limited if restricted to only teen horror.
When VGC asked if fans will have to wait long for its next title, Byles assures that the development time won't be as long as the gap between Until Dawn and The Quarry's release. He notes that they're aiming for a shorter turnaround time, which will be around four years, putting the release window around 2025 or 2026. Supermassive Games' recent acquisition by Nordisk Games earlier this year was a big move, with the acquisition bolstering the studio and support the teams in creating more horror themed narrative projects. It seems that Byles' next game will be one of the first under this umbrella.
