Warner Bros. is moving ahead with Practical Magic 2, with Susanne Bier, known for directing Bird Box, in talks to helm the sequel.
The original Practical Magic, released in 1998 and based on Alice Hoffman's 1995 novel, featured Sandra Bullock as Sally Owens and Nicole Kidman as Gillian Owens. In June 2024, it was confirmed that both actresses would return for the sequel.
While updates on the project have been sparse, Deadline reports that negotiations with Bier are underway. The screenplay for Practical Magic 2 is being written by Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the first film, with Bullock and Kidman also serving as producers alongside Denise Di Novi.
Bier has previously collaborated with both actresses—directing Bullock in the 2018 Netflix hit Bird Box and Kidman in the HBO miniseries The Undoing. Her extensive filmography includes notable works like The Night Manager and The First Lady.
As of now, a release date for Practical Magic 2 has not been announced. However, the original film is available for rent or purchase on various streaming platforms, including Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+.
The original movie follows sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, who, despite their magical heritage, have largely shunned witchcraft. Their lives take a turn when Gillian's abusive boyfriend, Jimmy Angelov, dies unexpectedly, prompting the sisters to delve into hard magic to resurrect him, inadvertently unleashing an evil spirit that threatens their family.
