Sommers is the second worst world noble after garling. Not only does he gleefully slaughter innocent people like the rest of his vile kin, but he was willing to kill shakky just because he wanted to get one up over garling by getting rid of the “prize” and to take sadistic pleasure in the despair the pirates would have over not saving their comrade. It also proves what a loathsome coward sommers really is since he would rather deal with someone that can seemingly not fight back then with pirates that actually. Fortunately, rayleigh appears and gives him a well deserved beating.
Garp is completely and doggedly hunting pirates to an insane degree, he's completely focused. He doesn't know his son is on the island and wounded and rescuing a coupla babies.
We know garp and roger team up on god valley at some point. We also know roger ends up with shanks. So possibly dragon escapes gv with the roger pirates as well? He just brings baby shanks with him? Garp gets stymied by some other enemy, probably the god knights or imu or whatever, thinks he's going to die, or at least not be able to rescue anyone, and entrusts roger to safely get his son off the island, which is why roger in turn entrusts garp with ace.
This would also give dragon a lot of very fast infamy that would add to his mystique in creating the revolutionary army.
