Shanks really hates the mark / his parentage so much he needs to be stopped from harming himself, poor guy. Also give it up for good dad gaban, the long wait to meeting him was worth it! We're getting closer and closer to "Oh I finally have a chance to get rid of this left arm, here we go! It's also not something that fully detracts from the moment. The point gaban is making here is "You shouldn't harm yourself just because you hate what you are." saving luffy meant he could lose his arm in a way that also helped luffy understand the weight of his choices. It's also a strong character moment for shanks now, as it is the moment he finally fully rejects everything about his heritage.
I like it. It has always been wild that shanks would lose an arm to a beast. This gives it a bit more of an underlying motive while still not removing that sacrifice for luffy and for the future that luffy might bring forth. He forego being burdened by his lineage and exchange it for a brighter future. I fucking love this image and also it makes me wonder if maybe its the reason why mihawk does not want to fight shanks anymore? He lacks the contract made with the abyss, so his body isn't as worthy as a weapon, not even that he wasn't as good as a swordsman anymore. Just the lack of it made mihawk not feel interest anymore. And I say this because it makes you wonder where mihawks power comes from as someone who fought shanks. We can already guess where blackbeard's power comes from, and that makes a point in shanks' scar.
Shanks only had the shallow sea covenant, which doesn't grant a strength boost or any other powers from the abyss, remember? The only thing it does is make it so that imu can control the bearer of the mark if they're close enough to them. It's not like the mark/contract made shanks's body any more "Worthy as a weapon," so why would mihawk care about the loss of the mark? He only cared about shanks losing his ability to use his sword two-handed.
